A cruise is a great vacation value, but there are ways that people booking a cruise (even seasoned travelers) can diminish their overall cruise experience. Likewise, even people new to cruising can enhance the cruise experience by following certain guidelines. Here are seven ways to get the most from your cruise.

First – Travel with a like-minded partner or friends. Most cruise ships are like Noah’s Ark: people board in pairs or in groups. While cruise lines will gladly allow you to cruise solo, it is not the best way to enjoy a cruise. Not only will you sometimes feel awkward during dining or cruise ship activities, you also get slapped with a surcharge since all cruising is based on double (or more) occupancy rates.

Furthermore, travel with compatible people. If you like to party, don’t decide to go on a cruise with a tee-totaler or a recovering drinker. How big is the Loggerhead Sea Turtle ?

The only living member of the genus Caretta, the Loggerhead sea turtle can grow up to an intimidating 364 kg and 1.1 metres long. The species is so named for the turtle’s over-large head punctuated by a set of strong jaws suitable for feeding on a wide range of sea life from molluscs (whelks and conch) to crustaceans (crabs and shrimp) to fish and jellyfish. They have also been known to consume small or immature marine animals such as sea birds and mammals.

Loggerheads have a large habitat ranging from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to the Indian Ocean. Atlantic migratory routes span from Newfoundland to Argentina with breeding and reproduction taking place in the warm waters of the southern hemisphere. Read more »

Storybook cottage offers California beach respite

A trip to California’s Central Coast is all about replenishment and reflection and an appreciation of the spectacular natural beauty here that never seems to grow old. And what better place to get a new perspective on your daily life than a storybook cottage footsteps from the pounding surf and amazing energy of the Pacific Ocean?

If long walks along a driftwood-strewn beach are your idea of a trip to the sea, then Moonstone Beach in Cambria is probably a good candidate for your next outing to the California Coast. Cambria is a place where you can spend hours each day walking – on the beach, on the boardwalk and through a quaint, historic artist’s colony chock-full of art galleries as well as unique shops and good restaurants.

Cambria is in San Luis Obispo County and located in an area that gives visitors several options for short daytrips. The wineries are just a few miles east, Hearst Castle just a few miles north. Some of California’s best beaches are a short drive to the south. And San Luis Obispo is just a few miles south and inland.

On our most recent trip to Cambria we discovered a charming group of cottages on Moonstone Beach that seem especially well suited to honeymoons or romantic getaways. There are just three “Moonstone Cottages” built on a small lot directly across the road from some of the best areas to explore on Moonstone Beach (so named because of the semi-precious agate and jasper stones that can be found in the sand). The cottages are not part of a big resort so you won’t be sharing your getaway with other travelers. Arriving at Gatwick Airport on Wednesday 4 February for the 14.35 Easyjet flight, we became aware of one of the downsides of low cost airfares. They use the far-flung North Terminal at Gatwick, and the resulting trek really makes one feel like a second class passenger. We proceeded to take the shuttle over to the outpost and checked in with a fairly surly clerk, who rattled through the ‘did you pack your luggage’ questions at a cracking pace.  I have not flown since the new regulations came in so I was listening closely to make sure I was not carrying anything that would be seized. I had to ask her to repeat one of the questions, which was not well received – she would be no good as a sales person for a franchise opportunity !   Expecting a long wait for the security check, we joined a long queue of patient travellers and, once clear, we explored the duty free area. By this time there was just over an hour to until our scheduled departure time. This just left time for a quick walk around the ‘duty free’ perfume and makeup section.
As we all know now, Easyjet is a no-frills airline so they charge for food and drinks in-flight. As the coffee and tea are simply vending machine drinks, it is best to get a drink at the airport beforehand.
