You can see the major attractions of Ireland on a bus tour but walking tours offer you the opportunity to interact with the people, live among Irish communities and appreciate the rich culture of the people.

During your walking tour holiday, you will come across several historical cites, most in ruins. The traveler will also venture out into the wild mountains, winding rivers and steep rocks that characterize rural Ireland.

Each trail provides a dramatic landscape, national parks, forests tracks and coastal lines, fringed with the ruins of ancient forts and castles. Most of these places are far away from the everyday bustle of the city and sets the hiker wondering how come the villagers are able to live in such solitude.

Whether you take a one week, two week or even a day’s walking tour during your holiday, you are sure to get enveloped in the historic treasures of this country.

No matter your route, you are bound to see the beautiful scenery of Ireland on your holiday. You will come across Irish villages set deep in the rural mountains or along the steep rocks. At each point on your walk, you will never stop marvelling at the forest tracks and lonely cottages dotted along the trails.

Hiking in Ireland can take many forms according to the level of exertion that the traveler can accommodate.

On a moderate holiday walk, you can merely visit the coastal areas and the gentle hills where there isn’t much stress. You can even traverse the moors which can be up to 1500 feet.

If you want something more challenging, you can attempt the steep mountains that can go as high as 4000 feet. These formations have steep ascents and descents and will be the perfect place for a mountaineer to pursue his sports.

For a more straining adventure, you can try the 400 feet mountains with very dangerous trails. You may need as much as nine hours to make a trip on these mountains and you will need protective clothing for all weathers.

For specific locations, you can visit the Iveragh peninsula in Kerry County. In this area, you will climb less known mountains which descend on rugged islands. Many travelers start from Killarney National Park and go through the Torc waterfall until they reach the mountains along old Kenmare Road .This trail has the Staigue Fort which is reputed to be one of the most outstanding Celtic forts in the country.

A walking holiday to Ireland provides you with beautiful scenery that can be best described by the hiker. You will discover Ireland in its simplest form as you go about its forest, rocky mountains and rustic moors.

————————

Thinking of going on a holiday to Turkey this year? You could have not possibly made a better choice. This country is fully in demand for the good value it offers on all inclusive holidays, package holidays as well as tailor made tours. Turkish seaside is full of sunshine for the best part of the year, no matter which coastline you choose to holiday; whether it’s the Mediterranean or Aegean side. Except the golden stretch of beaches, turquoise blue lagoons and fantastic scenery of mountain backdrops, both of the coastlines offer unparalleled hospitality and friendliness of the locals.

A warm welcome is a common denominator of each part of Turkey. Turkish people pride themselves with their service to the visitors of their wonderful country. Whether you are in a hotel, street market, bazaar or a local pharmacy, they will go out of their way to help with your requests and make you feel at home. In the rural areas of Turkey, you are most likely to be invited to their homes or for lunch and a round of backgammon. Most of them will be interested to practice their English, however in many cases, your conversation will be limited to the Turkish language. Getting by in Turkey if you have a little knowledge of Turkish is a lot more pleasurable experience. First of all, it is always largely appreciated by the local people and secondly, it will make your everyday life a lot easier.

Knowing some Turkish, although very limited, surely pays when haggling in the bazaars and when ordering food or paying bills in the restaurants. A friendly ‘Gunaydin’ or ‘Merhaba’ goes very far and it is a good way of making contact with the locals. It is possible to take a course of ’survival Turkish’ before you travel, however if you do not have enough time to learn the basics of this language in a classroom environment, it might be useful to invest into a CD or DVD and listen to it in your car or whilst doing your house duties. You will be delighted how quickly and easily you can master basic Turkish.

When in Turkey, it is always advisable to carry a pocket dictionary with you as it may come handy when dealing with airport officials, bank or medical staff. Buying a good quality guide book is a great idea, especially if it contains a section designated to useful phrases and basic survival language. These are divided by subjects and everyday situations for better orientation. And, should you find yourself in any emergency, it goes without saying, that you should have the numbers of the nearest British Embassy and your insurance company on an lcd monitorat hand as these can be crucial when dealing with your problem. Also, your tour company representative is likely to give you their emergency contact number which you can always rely on.

In everyday contact with the local people of Turkey, you may sometimes get ‘lost in translation’, however just ask any passers-by and you are bound to find someone who will happily assist with your language problem or translate the message. And you never know, you can even meet a few new friends this way!

Holidays in Turkey are culturally very different, mainly because of the traditions and customs of the country’s many regions and its historical diversity, and of course, the language itself. However, they are always fun and offer numerous unforgettable experiences. No wonder many of us choose to return year after year.

‘Iyi Yolculuklar!’

————————

Booking a cheap holiday is not always easy – you need to know where to begin! At packyourbags we specialise in finding the very best cheap holidays from around the world, to suit any budget. http://www.packyourbags.com

A carnival parade in Rio Brazil is made up of a series of conventions and criteria, which somehow regulate the amazing show watched by millions of people around the globe. Some of the evaluated criteria include the size of floats, parade timing, and harmony within the samba-school members, which are analyzed by a judging commission. The opening wing or “Comissao de Frente”, to use the original expression in Portuguese, is also one of these criteria examined by the carnival judging panel, to help determine the parade contest winner of each year. To understand why this element became a mandatory element in Brazilian parades, we have to go back at least 150 years in the history of Brazil´s Carnaval. Below we will provide a small summary of the opening wings ´origins, innovations and present characteristics so readers can enjoy the carnival culture in Brazil with more comprehension.

In the midst of 1850´s, before samba-schools formally existed, street carnival guilds called ‘carnival societies’, or in Portuguese, “sociedades carnavalescas” used to march in Rio´s street Carnivals. These organized clubs and samba associations celebrated Carnaval the old way, in a procession, and revelers would wear rich European costumes. These were the first carnaval groups assembled somehow in a parade. During these days, in the beginning of the caravan, men rode horses and wore tailcoat, mbt shoes and top hats ahead of the floats literally opening the parade / procession, and greeting spectators. Later, horses and carriages were substituted by open cars at the procession, in what would be called “Corso de Carnaval”. In essence, the samba-schools from today “borrowed” the idea from the Carnival Societies of the last quarter of the 1800´s in Brazil.

Isnard Araújo and Candeia, two famous samba scholars, wrote in a book called “Escola de Samba – Arvore que Nunca Esqueceu Raiz” – that the first samba-school to present a formal opening wing during an official parade was Portela. This fact was confirmed by Hiram Araújo, another renowned samba historian in Brazil, and by carnaval researcher Amaury Jório in the book “Escolas de Samba em Desfile”. From that moment on, other samba-schools started to have a “Comissão de Frente” on carnaval parades. Brazilian journalist Francisco Duarte, listening to testimonials from Unidos da Tijuca Samba-School founders, said that ahead of parade there was usually a live animal: “once there was a frog, another time a little she donkey, and finally, in 1936, a school member was there in a dragon costume greeting and opening way through people”. After this live animal, escorted or carried by a samba-school member, there was an opening float, usually a boy carrying a signboard made of painted cardboard. Preceding the Opening Wing, circus type clowns known as Tico-Ticos wearing satin suits came up, carrying their big walking sticks and cages.

First Innovations at Parades

Vizinha Faladeira, the first Samba-School to win a carnaval contest in Brazil, made a “small revolution” in the Carnaval of 1935, and their great novelty was exactly the Opening Wing, elegantly composed by 12 limousines. In 1936, Vizinha Faladeira Samba-School was again innovative and brought the Comissão de Frente on horses, just like the way Great Carnaval Societies (Grandes Sociedades) used to do.

From 1938 on, the Opening Wing became part of the official regulation for the parades. It was then formed by distinguished samba-school members, like directors from the board, patrons, elder samba players, or important people from community. This group had the mission to present the school to the jury to the carnaval crowd and authorities, while receiving applause from samba enthusiasts. They would go marching by foot.

Throughout the years, the Opening Wing always found a way to evolve and present a different look throughout its outfits, posture, in the presentation, and members / components. In 1965, in the Carnaval of the IV Centenary, Salgueiro Samba-School presented “little donkeys” as Opening Wing (typical from the “folguedos” – typical popular festival from several regions of Brazil). The first time though women came on a “Comissao de Frente” was in 1969 by Samba-School Imperatriz Leopoldinense. They represented the Africans and the theme was “Brazil, lovely flower of three races”.

In 1978, another historical curiosity: Estação Primeira de Mangueira Samba-School presented two Opening Wings during their parade. The first, which would be analyzed by the jury, was formed by women, and the second, formed by the elders from the samba-school like Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho, Grande Otelo, and others. Today, Comissão de Frente may be formed by men, women, or even children. They are fancy dressed, they come in white tie, black tie, suits, or costumes, whatever the parade-theme requires.

In case the samba-school chooses costumes according to the theme, the Comissao de Frente may go on parade developing choreography, dancing the samba, or simply walking slowly. There are regular and specific rehearsals for their members. Comissao de Frente has its performance ahead the school or after abre-alas ( opening float) and has a maximum and a minimum number of members, which is determined by the parade contest regulation.

Since the Opening Wing became a requirement for the contest judgment, samba-schools always give it special attention today, hiring choreography specialists, teachers and dancers, so as to avoid losing points in this contest criterion. In 1990, the Liga Independente ( Samba Association ) reduced the score value in its judgment criteria, same as occurred to Mestre-Sala and Porta-Bandeira, but, in 1991, the scores values became just like the other requirements. Whatever the “samba scholars” might think of in terms of criteria, keep an eye at this interesting portion of the parade. Just like in movies, the Opening Wing maybe a film preview, providing us small hints as to what the parade show will demonstrate us ahead!

————————

Andre Skowronski is lover of the Brazilian music & partner of http://www.brazilcarnival.com.br . He created the 1st local site in English entirely devoted to Rio´s Carnaval culture, containing exclusive photos, samba glossary, muses directory, & Rio Carnival guide.

Copyright © 2010 Travelog.
The Internet is a great resource for ski trips, especially cheap ski trips. These days you don’t need to know a friend of a ski operator or a cousin who works winters at a ski resort if they know of any deals on cheap ski trips. They can all be found online. These days with the opening of Eastern Europe, there are a lot of inexpensive ski packages, almost like backpacking ski resorts. Added to the situation is that this being an Olympic Year means that some resorts are experiencing temporary dips in their occupancies during the season and with a prolong season at that, some tour operators are giving great deals in order to fill up their quota for the year. It’s an interesting process for until the last minute; let’s say a week or five days before the trip itself, there may be last minute offers too good to pass up. In this instance, hedging a bit helps out a lot. But then again, this is just possible for this year as it is an Olympic Year.

If you are an experienced skier and a bit adventurous, then why not go and try skiing in new resorts that are out to make a name for it. These resorts offer great discounts and may even have long term packages or loyalty programs as they want to promote themselves as the next best thing. A lot of these resorts may be found in Eastern European countries so it’s best to contact them to see what packages they offer and to see how their English is. You may get a good deal on a resort but if the people aren’t very fluent in English, there may be a communication problem. The solution to this is to do your research and if needs be, bring a translation book that can quickly teach you words or phrases on that language. You would have to be a bit adventurous for this but then again, it may be worth it as you are introduced to a new culture. Don’t forget to try the local cuisine as well.

But if you like going back to your old haunts and favor being pampered by the ski resort that treats you like you are their only customer, email them and see if they have great rates for you. More often than not, they may have emailed you already in anticipation of the Olympics. See if you can get an upgrade to your rooms for the price you are paying, or a 3 year laptop warranty. One thing good about such resorts is that you are already familiar with them and I am sure that a few freebies will be thrown in your way.

————————

Finally, some useful information on how to find cheap ski trips. Check out the offers at http://www.cheapskideals.org/index.html and get ready to hit the slopes with cheap ski packages.

Emilia-Romagna is widely considered to be the gastronomic capital of Italy, and you better believe that it has a lot of competition. Its regional capital and largest city is Bologna, which brings a very ungastronomic sausage to mind. The city of Cento, population 35 thousand, is located 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of Bologna. It is home to the historic Cento Carnival of Europe, which runs on five consecutive Sundays attracting over 300,000 people. Since 1993 the Cento Carnival has been twinned with the Rio Carnival.

The Cento painter Gian Francesco Barbieri, known as “Guercino” depicted the Cento Carnevale in the early Seventeenth Century. Unfortunately the historic Carnevale was often a center of abuse and violence. The modern version started after World War II but it has really gained popularity and scope in the last twenty years. Its central attractions include the allegorical floats that are some of the most impressive in all Europe.

These “Monuments of papier-mache” that glorify fantasy, gaiety, and satire may be 20 feet (6 meters) wide and 60 feet (20 meters) long. And there are literally hundreds of such floats, many of which are outfitted with complex mechanical and hydraulic systems. The float processions are accompanied by snake dancing. Of course many of the floats refer to local and Italian personalities but even if you haven’t the vaguest notion of who is Italy’s prime minister (Silvio Berlusconi, who does manage to make it into the news from time to time), you’ll enjoy and often understand the floats. Extra added attractions are the candies, chocolates, designer ties and confetti generously distributed to the onlookers, as if the visual and auditory spectacles are not enough.

Busseto is a small town of about 7 thousand in the Parma subregion, known for great hams and Parmesan cheese. This town is closely associated with the famous composer Giuseppe Verdi. It’s also home to a Carnevale that started well over a century ago. Its heyday was in the 1930 when the audience was estimated at 30 thousand. Today things are slower but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a try. You may even prefer smaller crowds to Cento’s monster event. Busseto Carnevale is Sunday only event, held for four weeks running. One of its major focuses is on local food. You may try Culatello, a traditional ham that spends part of its maturation process in a pig bladder, hot Spalla Cotta (cured pork shoulder), other cured meats and Torta Fritta, savory fried dough often accompanied by cheese or meat. Enjoy the local wine even if it is not as good as those fabulous Parma cured meat and cheese.

————————

Calabria forms the foot of the Italian boot. This region is in the heart of the Mezzogiorno, the south of Italy. Who would expect to find an Albanian Carnival here? Who would expect to find an African Carnevale here? Keep on reading to learn about some of the most distinctive Carnevales in all Europe.

San Demetrio Corone is a village of fewer than four thousand people in Calabria that faces the Apennine Mountains and the Ionian Sea. It was founded over five hundred years ago by Albanians who were fleeing an Ottoman invasion. Despite the centuries the townsfolk have managed to keep their Albanian language and customs while becoming Italians. On the first Saturday of Carnival they celebrate the “Feste dei Morti.” The poor and children go from house by house collecting alms. Then they march to the local cemetery where food and drink is served surrounded by the spotlightson the gravestones. The food known as “Colivi” is made from boiled wheat and was eaten at Paleo-Christian funerals. In the nearby village of Saracena, population about four thousand, named for the Arabs who formerly ruled this part of the world, the Festa di San Leone (Feast of St. Leon) starts with candlelight procession from the church of that name accompanied by music made with traditional musical instruments. Then comes the “Fucarazzi’” (bonfire) at dusk that stays lit all night long while the inhabitants and guests enjoy the ritual food and drink.

Another Albanian Carnevale in Calabria is held in the village of Lungro many of whose three thousand some inhabitants speak a dialect of Albanian. The villagers celebrate Carnevale by parading in traditional Albanian costumes. In northern Calabria, the city of Montalto Uffugo (population about seventeen thousand) holds an interesting parade of men wearing women’s dresses. They hand out sweets and tastes of Pollino wine. Following the parade, the kings and queens arrive for a night of dancing wearing costumes that include giant heads. Actually cross dressing is a popular Calabrian Carnevale theme for both men and women as are the ancient Commedia dell’Arte farces in which Carnival is dying, surrounded by busy but hopelessly ineffectual doctors. The funeral is grotesque and ends with a huge bonfire.

The town of Castrovillari, population well over twenty thousand on the northern border of Calabria, holds its Carnival of Pollino. The women dress in intricate traditional costumes and both the men and women celebrate the Pollino wine of the region, Lacrima di Castrovillari. But there’s more. This Carnevale now includes a children’s carnival and an International Folklore Festival with Jazz concerts and several events devoted to African, Afro-American, and Afro-Brazilian culture. The times they are a’changing.

————————

Samba dancing may sound only as fun, especially for foreigners. But in Brazil, this activity is taken very seriously by amateur and professional dancers, as we will see below. Samba dancing in the Carnival of Brazil is part of our culture and somehow national identity. Just like Jazz in New Orleans, Tango in Argentina, and Salsa at the Caribbean, samba dancing is taught since the very early stages of life of Brazilians. In a natural form, every woman, (and some men too), learn how to samba dance to some extent, but are evidently not professionals. On this article, we will explain how samba-schools like Mangueira and Unidos da Tijuca, clubs, and other institutions linked to the carnival in Brazil conduct contests to discover and pick the best samba contests in Brazil.

As you have probably heard or seen, the Brazilian Carnaval became a very professional institution. Everyone involved want to make sure only the best resources are used, both material and human. A carnival parade encompasses many wings, and in one of them, as an example, only the best can join, as the “elite samba dancers’ wing”, or, as they care called in Portuguese, the “Passistas Wing”. Now how do these traditional samba-schools pick the very best samba dancers among thousands in the country, to represent the samba-school during a carnival season? Well, most of them conduct a challenging and very competitive samba dance contests in Rio and Sao Paulo.

The contests may sometimes take more than 2 or 3 rounds, and they normally happen at the samba-schools premises or famous samba auditoriums or specialized clubs. A series of criteria, like those used in health insurance in nc, are used to aid jurors select the best dancers. Just like a beauty pageant contest in the US, not only the beauty, or in this case, the dance per say is evaluated, but a series of attributes. Some of the criteria evaluated by the specialized jury include the candidates´ grace, posture, and coordination. But above all, the judging panel closely look at the “samba at the feet” criterion, or “Samba no Pé”, to use the original expression in Portuguese, which is the specific ability to dance the samba.

The jury is normally composed of experienced samba dancers, choreographers, former “Drum Queens” and important personalities in the Samba community. Number of candidates may vary and range from 20 up to 50, in famous contests. Some of the samba dancers come from very simple background, and they see these contests as a great opportunity to project themselves within the carnival community and media in general. Many of them, after winning these contests became authentic Carnival Queens, Muses, actresses and models. Tatiana Pagung, one of the all time Samba Dancers in the Carnival of Brazil, started her professional life winning several contests. Shayene Cesario, former Carnival Princess in Rio and this year´s Carnaval Queen, won Rio de Janeiro contest mainly because of her great samba skills and impressive beauty.

Rio hosts several contests, and one of the most important samba dancing contests is the Rio de Janeiro Carnival Queen and Princess competition promoted by the city´s official tourism body, called RIOTUR. This contest is always held on October and is extremely concurred. This year, more than 30 candidates took part of the competition and all major contenders displayed excellent samba routines. So next time in the Carnival of Brazil, try to visit one of these interesting contest-shows in the pre-Carnival period. Maybe you will learn how to dance the samba too!

————————

Andre Skowronski is lover of the Brazilian music & partner of http://www.brazilcarnival.com.br . He created the 1st local site in English entirely devoted to Rio´s Carnaval culture, containing exclusive photos, samba glossary, muses directory, news & Rio Carnival guide.

There is a song in the 90’s by a singer that loved Memphis, it goes like this, “Then I’m walking in Memphis, walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale…Walking in Memphis, but do I really feel the way I feel.” The singer must have really enjoyed the city, and so would you, since you’ll know in a bit why the place is such a big attraction.

Memphis In Tennessee is situated on the northern part of the Mississippi. A big city like Memphis has a lot of sights that are interesting to people who visit. Among these is the Mud Island River Park and Museum, where you can enjoy cruising, rafting and boating. If however a leisure Phentermine 37.5 bicycle ride is more your style, you can rent bicycles and ride around the River Walk and the Mississippi River.

The River Walk is actually a replica of the actual lower Mississippi River. It’s unique and fascinating in that every 30″ stride is the same as one mile of the actual River. The replica also has all the complete details of the real thing including the cities, landmarks and bridges along the river banks.

The Mississippi River Museum is interesting to history buffs and there are historical sites that you can visit. Adults and children alike will enjoy the Memphis Aquarium which has six large aquariums, all filled with various river creatures. Have you ever seen a life size replica of popular mode of transportation in Mississippi? Namely a large steamboat? Well you’ll get to see one at the River Museum.

There are camp sites for those who enjoy camping right in Memphis. For barbeque lovers out there, The Elvis Presley Boulevard has the best food Memphis has to offer and is close to “Home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock n’ Roll”, Mississippi River RV Park (located also at the Elvis Presley Blvd.) and if you want to be near the famous Beale Street, 8 miles from there is the Graceland KOA Campground.

Memphis would not be what it is without its many attractions. Every year all sorts of celebrations take place to commemorate various festivals. There are many festivals that are celebrated in Memphis, from the Carnival Memphis that celebrates the local industry, an Italian Festival, an art competition that attracts various artists from other states called the Cooper Young Festival, the annual celebration of the King Of Rock And Roll and other festivals that are too many to mention.

One festival that attracts huge crowds is the Memphis International Festival in May. Four main events will take place at the festival: the Beale Street Music Festival (the three-day musical event that kicks off the Memphis in May), the International Week (aims to expose the youth to different cultures from around the world), the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (the largest barbecue competition in the world), and the Sunset Symphony (the closing event where the Memphis Symphony Orchestra performs).

As you know by now, a visit to Memphis is inspiring for a vacation. We should know how the singer feels about Memphis…

————————
