Key West for a romantic weekend cruise vacation is an ideal choice for any couple who would like to enjoy a great romantic getaway. Situated in the southerly area of Florida, Key West is the place for any couple to leave their everyday routine behind and enjoy time for themselves. There are direct flights to the local international airport, but Miami international airport is a better choice. There are more scheduled flights to Miami so you should get your air ticket cheaply. The best bit about flying into Miami is that you take a romantic drive on US1 (aka The Overseas Highway), with breathtaking waterside views. As you drive towards Key West you will get a preview of the places that make up your weekend: the ocean, fishing boats and yachts in the harbors, local craft shops and restaurants and seafront hotels.
As this is your romantic getaway you will prefer a quiet hotel where you can enjoy being alone, away from the usual routine. Spend your romantic weekend at the luxurious Marquesa Hotel right in the center of the historic district. Just in the same street, you could stay for two nights at the Eden House, offering the same historic atmosphere with a more affordable room rate.
You could spend the first day on the beach enjoying the sun and sand, and strolling to a seafood restaurant for lunch. On the second day you may want to explore: Dry Tortugas island is a beautiful nearby destination for bathing or snorkelling and diving. You can reach it on a ferry cruise, or take a chartered small plane.
And you must also have a look at Key West itself, enjoying the promenade lined with palm trees as you rekindle the romance in your relationship.
Lingering over local cuisine is one of the essentials of weekend getaways. On Duval Street you will find many of Key West’s top restaurants - just take your pick and choose the style that suits your taste.
When to visit - If you want real peace and quiet for your romantic break, most of the year you will find the seclusion you desire in Key West. If you enjoy celebrations and lively nightlife, then a visit in the Spring will give you the party atmosphere to make your weekend exciting. Local bars and restaurants throw parties to celebrate the start of the season. Later in the season, in November, there is a huge power boat race that attracts a lively crowd who enjoy water sports.
Key West was the home of the writer Ernest Hemingway, and you can visit a museum dedicated to his powerful novels of feelings and life changing events. The beauty and drama of Key West was a pivotal part of Hemingway’s inspiration and you can visit the locations where his imagination was inspired to write his great works.
As you can see, Key West, with its eclectic mix of activities, offers something special for couples seeking all types of weekend breaks. The location is reached easily by plane or by road, and the mild climate makes this area an all year round destination.
